Unveiling the Unity Agenda
In his first State of the Union Address, President Biden identified mental health as an area of concern in our nation. In particular, he acknowledged “bullying, violence, trauma, and the harms of social media” as contributing factors predating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the nation looks to our leadership in times of uncertainty, this spotlight on mental health is an important step in furthering conversation and generating tangible change.
The White House also released a statement further describing Biden’s mental health strategy. The action plan includes strengthening the capacity of our mental health systems, connecting Americans to care, and creating healthy environments— which includes increasing research on social media’s mental harms. The plan also promises additional funding to support the launch of the 988 crisis response line. This strategy shows great promise and indicates that the United States government is allotting well-deserved attention to youth mental health.
As many states are mid-way through their congressional sessions, keep an eye out for important mental health reforming legislation at both state and national levels.
